Doctors are like health detectives! They figure out what's wrong with people and help them get better.
Some doctors help sick kids (pediatricians), some fix broken bones (orthopedic surgeons), and some help people with heart problems (cardiologists).
• Doctors go to school for a LONG time - usually 4 years of college + 4 years of medical school + 3-7 years of residency
• The first doctors were called "healers" and used herbs and prayers
• There are over 60 different types of doctors!
Help people: You get to make a real difference in people's lives every day!
Always learning: Medicine is always changing - you'll never stop learning new things
Good pay: Doctors earn a good salary (but remember, money isn't everything!)
Respect: Doctors are trusted members of every community
1. Do well in school - especially science and math!
2. Get good grades in college to get into medical school
3. Go to medical school - 4 years of learning about the body
4. Do a residency - more training in a hospital (3-7 years)
5. Get licensed - pass tests to be allowed to practice medicine
Being a doctor is hard work! Long hours, stressful situations, and lots of studying. But if you love helping people and science, it can be an amazing career!
