🍽️ What is Baby Led Weaning?
Imagine instead of spoon-feeding your baby mushy food from a jar, you let them grab REAL food and feed themselves!
That's Baby Led Weaning (BLW) - babies hold food, explore it, and learn to eat at their own pace!
🍼 "Weaning" here means starting solids, not stopping milk! Babies still drink breastmilk or formula as their main food until age 1!
🎯 The Big Idea!
Traditional way: Adult spoons pureed food INTO baby's mouth
BLW way: Baby picks up food and feeds THEMSELVES
Babies learn to:
- 🤲 Pick up food with their hands
- 👄 Bring it to their mouth
- 👅 Explore textures and tastes
- 😋 Decide how much to eat
📏 Shape Matters! (Finger Foods)
Babies need food they can GRAB! Make it:
- Long enough - like your index finger (baby's fist + sticking out)
- Soft enough - squish between your fingers like a ripe avocado
- Thick enough - so baby can hold it without it disappearing!
✋ If YOU can squish it between your thumb and finger, baby's gums can mash it! (Babies don't need teeth to eat soft foods!)
📅 When Can Babies Start?
👶 0-6 months
Only milk!
No solid food yet
🧒 6+ months
Ready to start!
Can sit with support
Signs baby is ready (ALL of these):
- ✅ Can sit up with little or no support
- ✅ Holds head steady
- ✅ Hand-eye coordination (can grab things and bring to mouth)
- ✅ Lost the tongue-thrust reflex (doesn't push food out automatically)
😰 Gagging vs Choking
Gagging is NORMAL and SAFE!
- 🟢 Baby makes noise (coughing, gagging sounds)
- 🟢 Baby is moving air
- 🟢 Baby's face might turn red
- 🟢 It's their body learning where food goes!
Choking is DANGEROUS - call for help!
- 🔴 Baby is SILENT (no air moving)
- 🔴 Baby can't cry or cough
- 🔴 Face turns blue
⚠️ Always watch baby while eating! Take a baby CPR class to be prepared!
✨ Why Some Parents Love BLW
- 🍽️ Baby eats what the family eats (less special cooking!)
- 🤲 Develops fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination
- 👅 Explores different textures early
- 😄 Learns to self-regulate (stops when full)
- 👨👩👧 Family meals together from the start!
Remember: Every family is different! Some do BLW, some do purees, some do both. The "right" way is what works for YOUR family!
🧸 ELI5 Important Disclaimer: This is for learning, not medical advice! Every baby develops differently. Always talk to your pediatrician before starting solids. Some babies have allergies, some need special approaches. You know your baby best!
🚨 Safety First: Avoid choking hazards (whole grapes, whole nuts, popcorn, hot dogs, raw hard veggies). Always supervise meals. Learn infant CPR!
